Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken burst onto the LA scene in 1981 with their award-winning restaurant CITY, and very soon thereafter opened BORDER GRILL, their homage to true Mexican cooking. The two women traveled extensively around Mexico, visiting cities like Oxaca, Merida, and Veracruz, and came back with authentic recipes from regions that most people in the United States had never heard of. Once again they scored a hit with brightly painted large murals (Huntley Muir), a huge art/modern cantina, and the feeling that you’d never tasted bona fide Mexican food until now.
